Pod of Dolphins Strand Feed on South Carolina Shore

A pod of dolphins was seen “strand feeding” – or herding prey into a shallow area – on the shore of Charleston, South Carolina, on July 17.

Taylor Haston told Storyful she moved to the Charleston area 6 months ago and has been trying to spot the dolphins feeding on the beach without much luck, until now.

When a pod of dolphin strand feeds, they herd their prey into a sandbar or a mudflat near the shore, before emerging from the waves and crashing down to feed, according to the Town of Kiawah Island.

Haston managed to capture video footage of this exact phenomenon after waiting on the shore for a couple of hours.

“I realized after reading about them that you have to time the tides right,” Haston said.

“It was amazing. They are amazing creatures with incredible energy,” she told Storyful. Credit: Taylor Haston via Storyful
