Podcast: 10 takeaways (Bain, Mauigoas, receivers and more) from Miami’s 2023 spring game

From Francis Mauigoa to Rueben Bain Jr., the freshmen stole the show at the Miami Hurricanes’ spring game last Friday, but it wasn’t all there was to learn about this upcoming season.

On a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, break down the spring game and what it taught them about how Miami might look later this year — the good and the bad.

The Hurricanes revamped offense flashed some promising signs, their newcomers had some good moments and, overall, Miami appeared to be improved from the end of last season — even if it was just a scrimmage. There were also some concerns confirmed, particularly at wide receiver and cornerback, and coach Mario Cristobal should now have a clear idea of how he still needs to reshape his roster.

In all, they have 10 takeaways from the Hurricanes’ showcase at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, including:

Tyler Van Dyke looking like his old self,

fellow quarterback Jacurri Brown struggling,

wide receiver Jacolby George continuing to build on his breakthrough spring,

linebacker Francisco Mauigoa stepping up a major position of need,

Bain picking up where he left off at Miami Central and piling up three sacks,

some punting issues and much, much more.

One note: Wilson and Degnan recorded this week before On3.com reported Van Dyke is considering transfer possibilities. They’ll be back next week to check in on this developing story and how it could affect the Hurricanes, plus to catch up on all the recruiting news, headlined by four-star St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Chance Robinson’s commitment.
