Podcast: 2 huge Miami recruiting wins and 2 big storylines we’re already eyeing for camp

The dog days of summer have been good to the Miami Hurricanes.

After a quiet start to the 2024 recruiting cycle, Miami finally got rolling last week by landing a pair of blue-chip in-state recruits and beating out a handful of national powers to lock them down.

It started with five-star Chaminade-Madonna athlete Joshisa Trader picking the Hurricanes out of nowhere Thursday and continued Friday when four-star Blountstown defensive lineman Artavius Jones orally committed to Miami, too.

To land Trader and Jones, the Hurricanes had to beat out Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, UCF and Ohio State.

On a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, break down the commitments and what they mean for Miami, and then take a quick look ahead to training camp.

The Trader pledge is easily the biggest so far for the Hurricanes in the Class of 2024. He’s the No. 2 player in South Florida, according to the 247Sports composite rankings for the 2024 recruiting class, and has a chance to be Miami’s first truly elite wide receiver of the decade -- something the Hurricanes need, given the state of college football and the position in Coral Gables.

The Jones commitment is interesting, too. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive tackle has thrived in basketball, weightlifting, track and field, and even as a two-way player in football, which means he checks a lot of the athletic boxes coaches are seeking out when they try to find linemen.

To close things out, Wilson and Degnan each offer up one topic they have their eyes on with fall camp set to begin in the next two weeks.
