It’s hard to believe the end of the season is here, yet here we are. The Miami Hurricanes close out the regular season Saturday against the Duke Blue Devils in Durham, North Carolina.

It might also be the end of the Manny Diaz era.

It’s still an open question, though, and it’s the first topic on the latest episode of the Eye on the U podcast. David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, talk about the latest developments within the athletic department and where Diaz’s job security stands in the final week of the season.

The coach keeps making a case to keep his job, it just might be too little too late after a disastrous first half of the season.

Still, Diaz has Miami (6-5, 4-3 Atlantic Coast) playing hard for him and it’s the case he’s making to get a fourth season in Coral Gables. There are some people on the Board of Trustees sympathetic to Diaz’s argument, Rivals.com reported Monday, and it’s complicating what once seemed inevitable.

Of course, it probably won’t matter if coach Mario Cristobal is willing to leave the Oregon Ducks to come home to South Florida. The Hurricanes have their No. 1 target in mind. The question the board and the administration face is what to do if Cristobal won’t leave Oregon.

Rhett Lashlee could also be on the way out, although not because he’s getting fired. The offensive coordinator is set to become the SMU Mustangs’ top target if SMU coach Sonny Dykes leaves for the TCU Horned Frogs, Yahoo! Sports reported, and his departure would obviously throw a wrench into Diaz’s argument he can turn Miami into a real contender next year.

We wrap up by talking about the search for a new athletic director, when a hire might happen and how Seattle Seahawks personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith fits into the picture.

As always, please continue to rate, review and subscribe, and happy Thanksgiving!
