A season full of close calls and what-ifs for the Miami Hurricanes added another one Saturday with Miami’s 38-31 loss to No. 9 Louisville at Hard Rock Stadium.
For the second straight week, the Hurricanes had a chance to knock off a top-10 team in the final minutes and couldn’t put together the game-tying -- or, perhaps, game-winning -- drive they needed.
On a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, talk through another frustrating, vexing regular season in South Florida, which will wrap up this weekend when Miami (6-5 2-5 Atlantic Coast) takes on Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
In the middle of it all is quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who will get a little bit of a homecoming Friday in New England after seemingly righting the ship by throwing for more than 300 yards in the Hurricanes’ close loss to the Cardinals in Miami Gardens.
Could this be Van Dyke’s final game as a Hurricane this weekend? The question looms over Miami’s regular-season finale, even though the Hurricanes have already qualified for a bowl game. A strong finish would go a long way for Van Dyke’s future, no matter where it takes him.
Miami also could be in danger of losing defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, who has been one of the Hurricanes’ biggest bright spots this year. LSU and USC are both reportedly interested in the coach, and Miami, after turning over more than half its coaching staff last offseason, can’t afford anymore instability by losing a good assistant coach.
