QUINCY – Poet Matthew E. Henry will read from his work at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Thomas Crane Public Library.

Drawing on stories and experiences dealing with race, racism and racists, Henry relates what it is like being a Black student and teacher in predominantly white spaces. The journey starts in first grade, when Henry was a METCO student in Wellesley. The collection wraps up in the present day at Weston High School, where he teaches English.

Henry released “the Colored page,” his third book and first full-length collection, this past July. One reviewer wrote, "Henry’s poems are a master class for teacher-writers on turning daily challenges into art. This book could change your life in more ways than one.”

Henry’s previous works are “Teaching While Black” and “Dust & Ashes.” On his website, Henry writes his work “shines a black-light on the bed of education, race, relationships, religion and everything else you’re not supposed to discuss in polite company.”
