Points race tighten at 34 Raceway as season finally in full gear

MIDDLETOWN — After six straight weeks of cancellations due to weather, 34 Raceway finally is in the midst of heated points races in all seven classes of cars.

Those points races got even tighter Saturday with six classes competing at the 3/8-mile oval dirt track.

Winning feature races were Cody Wehrle in 305 sprints, Jarrett Brown in IMCA modifieds, Dylan VanWyk in IMCA sport modifieds, Chad Krogmeier in IMCA stock cars, Brian Tipps in mini haulers and Dustin Schram in dirt late models.

Wehrle, a veteran from Burlington and three-time defending points champion in 305 sprints, extended his lead in the points race to eight points over Chase Richards of Burlington with his second feature win of the season.

Wehrle pulled away to win the feature race, while Richards took second and Burlington veteran Nick Gurnsey finished third.

Sean Wyett of Danville, the five-time defending season champion in IMCA sport modifieds, is tied for second in points with Wyatt Wolf, both eight points behind leader Dylan VanWyk of Oskaloosa.

VanWyk extended his points lead by winning his first feature of the season, with Wyett taking second and Mitch Strayer of Davenport finishing third.

Jarrett Brown of Ainsworth has won both feature races in IMCA modifieds, but trails Austen Becerra of Carthage, Illinois, by one point.

Brown won the feature race, with Bill Roberts, Jr., of Burlington taking second and Becerra finishing third.

Chad Krogmeier of Burlington won his first IMCA stock car feature race of the season and widened his lead in the points race to 11 points over Ray Raker of Danville.
