Pokémon’s Detective Pikachu sequel is taking an exciting step forward as the film has finally found its director.

According to Deadline, Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel is in talks to direct the sequel. The film will be written by Chris Galletta.

The first film was directed by Rob Letterman and starred Ryan Reynolds, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton.

At this time, there is no official confirmation, but it is believed that Ryan Reynolds, who voiced the titular character, will have some part to play in the sequel.

As for the rest of the original cast? We don’t know if they’ll be back for the sequel, but if you go by what Justice Smith said a couple of years ago, he would be more than happy to jump back on board.

Speaking to Inverse back in 2021, the actor revealed he didn't have high hopes about a sequel, but would love to be a part of it should it come to fruition.

"I would love to participate in Detective Pikachu 2," he said, adding: "I don't know if it's going to happen.”

"I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don't think it's going to happen. I really hope so though. Honestly, I'm such a huge fan, who knows, who knows? I hope so," he said.

As for Ryan Reynolds, he is currently gearing up to introduce Deadpool into the MCU with the third instalment of the franchise. Hugh Jackman is returning to play Wolverine in the film, and it has been reassured multiple times that the events of Deadpool 3 will not mess up the perfect send off film that was Logan.

The film will be released on November 8, 2024, and it will be the MCU’s first R-rated film. The Adam Project director and frequent Ryan Reynolds collaborator Shawn Levy will direct the film.

Detective Pikachu 2 currently doesn't have a release date.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+, and also available on digital download, DVD and Blu-ray. Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has a release date of November 8, 2024.
