MUNCIE, Ind. — The Muncie Polar Plunge, part of a statewide effort to benefit Special Olympics Indiana, is set for Saturday, Feb. 25, at University Green on the Ball State campus.

Registration will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., with the Plunge set to begin at noon.

"The bucket-list event challenges individuals and teams to be bold and get cold, taking an icy dip to demonstrate their commitment to the cause," according to a release from Special Olympics Indiana.

Participants must raise at least $85 for the chance to plunge at one of 15 locations statewide, at events that began Saturday and will continue through March 4.

In a typical year, more than 3,000 people take part in the events, with many raising significantly more than the minimum.

Those raising the $85 minimum will receive a commemorative long-sleeved T-shirt. Those who reach higher fundraising levels will receive additional prizes.

Again this year, the Polar Plunge Virtual Run challenges runners and walkers to complete a 5K or 10K event, any time and any place through March 31. Virtual run participants who raise at least $85 will receive a finisher's medal and be eligible for the same prizes as Polar Plungers.

All funds raised will benefit more than 16,000 athletes throughout Indiana and help ensure a growing number of children and adults with intellectual disabilities can participate in the state's sports, health, education and leadership programs at no cost.

The Polar Plunge has raised more than $10 million for Special Olympics Indiana.
