The fifth and final season of Poldark premiered on BBC One tonight (July 14), and viewers were thoroughly excited to see Aidan Turner channel his inner James Bond.

That's right, all those rumours of the actor becoming the next 007 must have been heard by someone on the show, because the final season is pitching Ross Poldark as a spy.

In tonight's opener, Ross returned to London to discover that his old army buddy Ned Despard (Vincent Regan) had been imprisoned as part of a plot by slave trader Ralph Hanson (Peter Sullivan). Ned's wife, former slave Kitty (Kerri McLean), then begged Ross to help free her husband.

Later on, Ross had a very secretive meeting in a theatre in which he was offered of a "covert role" to help "crown and country".

Not much else was revealed about his secret role, but nevertheless, viewers were thrilled to discover that this season will basically be one massive Bond audition for Aidan.

One viewer tweeted: "Love this. Capn Poldark's going to be a spy! #Poldark #Bond #Bondark"

While another excited viewer wrote: "The name's Poldark. Ross Poldark, 007."

Last month, Aidan spoke to Digital Spy about his new role on the show and admitted it was "fun" to play that side of the character, adding: "It's another string to his bow. It seems to fit his character."

Poldark airs on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
