"Dwight has been Ross Poldark’s best friend since they were together in the American War of Independence," Luke said.

"And that is all challenged this year because their officer from that war turns up in London and they have to bail him out, and this new bromance begins and Dwight’s kind of left on the sidelines."

He added: "It’s bittersweet. It’s been a lovely five years. And I’ve made a lot of good friends.

"Its heart is in the right place. It’s a glorious, beautiful thing to watch and Cornwall’s a gorgeous backdrop for it and the story is about people who… the good guys win and the bad guys lose and love wins out above everything, it’s sort of the way we wish the world was."
