Police say 3-vehicle crash that closed Taft Hill Road was caused by impaired driver

A three-vehicle crash police say was caused by an impaired driver closed a portion of South Taft Hill Road in Fort Collins Tuesday afternoon.

The crash was reported to police about 3:51 p.m. Tuesday and happened near Taft Hill's intersection with West Drake Road, according to a Fort Collins Police Services news release.

Police say a Toyota Highlander going northbound on Taft Hill rear-ended a Subaru Outback, which made the Outback go over a median and roll.

Police say the Highlander then collided with a Kia Sportage in the southbound lanes of Taft Hill Road and kept going north. The vehicle ultimately stopped "due to disabling damage," according to the news release.

The crash seriously injured both occupants of the Subaru Outback, and they were taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to the news release. The driver of the Kia Sportage wasn't injured, police said.

Police say a REDDI, or Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately, report was made about the driver of the Toyota Highlander shortly before the crash that "reported that the Highlander was driving recklessly."

Police say the vehicle's driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested on suspicion of multiple charges.

The press release did not specify how police determined they were impaired, and the Coloradoan plans to ask for more information Wednesday.

The Fort Collins Police Collision, Reconstruction and Scene Handling Team ultimately took over the investigation "due to the severity of injuries."

The crash and subsequent investigation caused the closure of northbound Taft Hill Road between Drake Road and Valley Forge Avenue. Just before 7 p.m., Fort Collins Police Services tweeted that the road had reopened.
