Police: Alabama woman sought in homicide shot herself after crashing car in Ormond Beach

An Alabama woman sought in connection with a double homicide in Lake County fatally shot herself after crashing her car in an Ormond Beach parking lot last month, police said.

Samantha Butler, 29, fled from a traffic stop on Aug. 26, and shortly after 11:24 a.m. crashed in the parking lot of the KFC at 294 West Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach police said.

Butler died from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound" and not injuries suffered in the crash, said Ormond Beach police Capt. Chris Roos in a news release. "The self-inflicted gunshot occurred after the motor vehicle crash."

After the crash, a passenger, Roger Gilbert, 35, also of Alabama, ran from the car but was caught in a store by police. Gilbert had a stolen firearm in his waistband, police said.

Ormond Beach police later discovered that Butler and Gilbert were wanted in a double homicide in Lake County.

According to Lake County Sheriff's Office Lt. John Herrell, deputies in that county were called to a shooting on Aug. 25 at a Pennsylvania Road home in Altoona.

David Thomas Mikell, 34, of Umatilla, and Shane Eugene Clements, 41, of Altoona, were both found shot to death inside the home, Herrell said.

Witnesses told Lake County deputies that Butler and Gilbert were involved in the murders, Herrell said.

No charges have been filed in the double homicide and the investigation into the murders continues, Herrell said on Wednesday.
