Police have arrested a driver who they say was so drunk “they were surprised he could see”.

Staffordshire Police said officers had been alerted by the public about the driver, who had parked his vehicle in a residential area of Stafford.

On Sunday, its Road Policing Unit tweeted an image of the driver in the back of a police car, with a grey Renault van in the background close to some houses.

The force said the driver recorded a reading of 112 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, more than three times the legal limit.

The legal drink driving limit in England is 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.

The force said it was “surprising that he could see anything”.

It tweeted: “We couldn't do our job without help from the public.

“Concerns were raised about the drunken state of this overseas courier parked up in the Stafford area.

“We attended and he blew 112 (limit = 35). The driver has been arrested and will be placed before next available court.”

The police Twitter account added: “It’s surprising that he could see anything with that much alcohol in his system.

“Hats off to the public who prevented a far more serious and tragic incident.”

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police told Yahoo News UK: “A 34-year-old man has been charged with being in charge of a motor vehicle with alcohol above the limit.
