Kenyatta Henry, 23, was arrested Tuesday and charged with fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury just a few hours after the initial incident occurred, according to Daytona Beach Police.

Henry is a relative of Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry, according to television news reports. It's not clear what relation Kenyatta Henry is to the mayor.

Statement released by mayor

Derrick Henry released a statement last night on Facebook:

"I would like to express my utmost concern for the young child who was injured in the unfortunate incident involving a member of my family earlier today. My entire family's thoughts and prayers are with the child and her family during this difficult time, and I am hopeful for her quick and complete recovery. I believe that it is imperative that we prioritize the well-being of the child, and I trust that the legal proceedings will be conducted with full transparency and impartiality."

The child was struck at about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 800 Block of Forest Lane in Daytona Beach. A black Dodge Charger was seen fleeing north on Forest toward Mason Avenue, according to police.

Police learned of the hit-and-run when they were called to Halifax Health Medical Center where they found the child suffering from injuries.

Just before 4 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Fulton Street, Daytona Beach, in reference to a disturbance with several callers on the scene saying the disturbance was related to the hit and run.

Officers arrived at the Fulton disturbance and located the suspect and the suspect's vehicle.

The child was last heard to be stable enough to be airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital Orlando for treatment.

This is not the first time Henry has been in trouble with the law.

Court records show charges in November 2022 for trafficking fentanyl, fleeing and eluding police, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, driving without a license, and running a stop sign. He's pled not guilty.

Previous charges include grand theft with a firearm and possession of cocaine and cannabis, according to court records.
