Police arrest man in connection with fatal shooting outside Hoss’s Deli in Newport News

Police arrested a man in connection with the Tuesday homicide on Old Oyster Point Road in Newport News, citing the use of technology in aiding with the arrest.

Derek Eugene Williams, 38, of Newport News, was charged with second-degree murder, shooting from a vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a felony, according to police.

Aaron Paul West, a 30-year-old Gloucester man, was killed in a shooting outside Hoss’s Deli early Tuesday morning. Police responded to the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road at about 12:46 a.m. and found West outside the restaurant with a gunshot wound.

West was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew attributed the quick arrest to “the use of technology and the involvement of our citizens.”

A police spokesperson declined to release details about what policing technology aided in the arrest, citing the ongoing investigation. In a YouTube video posted Tuesday, Drew talked about the department’s use of body cameras, ShotSpotter gunfire locators, Flock license plate reading cameras and the Real Time Crime Center.
