Police arrest man after long standoff in east Redding neighborhood

Police arrested a man wanted for a parole violation after a standoff at an east Redding home that went on for several hours.

David Merrifield, 35, was arrested early Wednesday morning on a variety of charges after authorities found him hiding in the attic of a house on Irwin Road, the Redding Police Department said in a news release posted on its Facebook page.

The standoff started around 5 p.m. Tuesday after Merrifield ran from a vehicle and was spotted by a California Highway Patrol helicopter entering the back door of the home on Irwin Road.

Police said officers found a loaded shotgun and several rounds of ammunition in the vehicle that Merrifield abandoned.

Officers surrounded the home, and the Redding police SWAT team was brought in. Irwin Road was closed at East Cypress Avenue for several hours.

Merrifield refused to come out of the home on Irwin Road after several hours of negotiations before officers entered the house and found him hiding in the attic, police said. He was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail.

Merrifield was wanted by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for a parole violation, police said.
