Sleeping man attacked after 2 masked men force their way into Brookline home

Police are searching for two masked men who broke into a multi-million dollar home in Brookline and attacked a man who was sleeping inside early Tuesday morning.

Officers responding to a report of a house break-in at 45 Warren Street around 2:20 a.m. learned a pair of invaders wearing masks had forced their way into the home through a second-floor balcony and attacked a 61-year-old man, leaving him with a head laceration, according to the Brookline Police Department.

Investigators noted that evidence recovered indicates a firearm was discharged during the invasion. No one was struck by the gunfire.

At least two people were asleep in the home when the invasion occurred. There was no immediate word on if anything was stolen.

Video obtained by Boston 25 showed one of the suspects covering a surveillance camera outside of the home with what appeared to be a surgical mask.

A second suspect in a black hoodie, black mask, and blue gloves was also caught on video ducking out of the view of a surveillance camera as he snooped around below a deck.

Detectives were spotted carrying brown bags of apparent evidence away from the scene. An ambulance was also seen parked near the home shortly after the assault.

A neighborhood resident who was stunned to hear about the incident told Boston 25 that he typically feels “incredibly safe” in the area.

“I feel bad for them. They are nice people, quiet and to themselves,” said a neighbor.

Former State Representative John Businger, who lives nearby, was surprised when he heard it was an armed home invasion. “Very strange. One wonders if they cased the joint or if there was any relationship between the parties,” said Businger.

There were a number of surveillance cameras spotted on the property, which is situated along the Brookline Reservoir. Public files indicate the home was recently sold for $4.2 million.

A heavy police presence remains in the area of Warren and Walnut streets as the search for the suspects presses on.

An investigation remains ongoing.
