Police: Cape Coral teen kills man during gun play in car, not realizing gun was loaded

A Cape Coral teen who said he didn't realize a handgun was loaded when he shot a fellow passenger in a car early Sunday. The shot resulted in the man's death, Cape Coral Police said.

About 12:13 a.m., officers responded to Cape Coral Hospital, where Damian M. Gonzalez, 23, of Cape Coral, arrived after suffering a gunshot wound to his upper chest.

Emergency workers pronounced him dead.

Officers spoke to three people in the car and said Giordanni V. Castro, 18, of Cape Coral was in the front passenger seat, with Gonzalez behind him.

After exchanging some banter, the report said Castro took his handgun and placed against Gonzalez' chest and fired. He didn't realize the gun was loaded.

He tossed the gun from the vehicle, but officers recovered it.

Police said the shooting wasn't intentional, and all occupants confirmed a similar account.

Castro faces manslaughter charges and was in Lee County Jail.
