Police clear Grosse Pointe Farms park after explosive found

Pier Park in Grosse Pointe Farms reopened Saturday following the discovery of an explosive device at the park Friday.

A park employee found the metal device at the park and threw it into the lake before law enforcement retrieved it for investigation, Grosse Pointe Farms police said.

The explosive device was about 5 to 6 inches long and resembled a pipe bomb, police found after investigation. Officers from Michigan State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Detroit police bomb squad responded to the scene.

Police temporarily closed the park for the remainder of Friday evening in light of the incident. Officers cleared the scene and determined there was no active threat to the public.

Law enforcement from the following departments assisted in the incident response: Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Shores, Bloomfield Township, Michigan State Police and West Bloomfield Police K-9 Units.

Grosse Pointe Farms police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
