A 57-year-old Detroit radio anchor was killed by a "family friend" wielding a hammer over the weekend in an incident that also left his partner and their two children hospitalized. WWJ-AM NewsRadio radio host Jim Matthews was identified by the station as the lone casualty in the incident, which also left three of his family members hospitalized on Friday. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced the man, whose identity is still unknown, was charged in a "John Doe" complaint with one count each of murder, assault with intent to commit rape during a residential burglary, first-degree residential burglary and sexual contact with deceased remains.

Authorities were searching Tuesday for a 42-year-old convicted bombmaker who escaped from a Nevada prison where he was serving a life sentence for a deadly 2007 explosion outside a Las Vegas Strip resort. Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered an investigation into the incident after he said late Tuesday his office learned the escapee had been missing from the medium-security prison since early in the weekend. “This is unacceptable,” Sisolak said in a statement.
North Carolina officials have released the 911 call made by a witness who found the bodies of two North Carolina teenagers reported missing more than a week ago. Lyric Woods, 14, and Devin Clark, 18, were reported missing after the night of Friday, Sept. 16 when their parents discovered they had not returned home. Oklahoma's Pardon and Parole Board voted 4-1 Tuesday to deny clemency for a man sentenced to die for killing his 9-month-old daughter in 2002, moving him a step closer to his scheduled lethal injection next month. Attorneys for Benjamin Cole, 57, did not dispute that Cole killed Brianna Cole by forcibly bending the infant backward, breaking her spine and tearing her aorta, but argued that he is both severely mentally ill and that he has a growing lesion on his brain that has continued to worsen while he has been in prison.

An 18-year-old man charged for allegedly beating a Chinese American man into a coma in Chicago’s Chinatown back in April has been denied bail. Jin Yut Lew, 61, was robbed, brutally beaten with a blunt object and “left for dead” during the attack, his children said. Surveillance footage taken on the morning of the incident reportedly captured Lew’s car being trailed by a stolen vehicle.

Delaware jewelry shop owner relearning how to walk after being brutally beaten, pistol-whipped during armed robbery
A jewelry shop owner was pistol-whipped and brutally beaten during an armed robbery in Wilmington, Delaware. On the morning of Sept. 15, Calvin Ushery, 39, was captured interacting with the 68-year-old Korean American entrepreneur on surveillance footage inside the jewelry store located on the 100 block of West 9th Street. In the video, Ushery can be seen pulling out a gun and grabbing the owner before pistol-whipping him in the head.

Three former Delaware County police officers are headed to trial after killing 8-year-old Fanta Bility, according to The Associated Press. Bility was killed when the officers shot at her family’s vehicle. Ballistics can’t tell which officer fired the fatal shot, but the court ruled they’ll all be charged in connection to her death.
