Police department's K-9 challenging incumbent goat for mayoral pet race

As the Fair Haven Police Department’s K-9, Sammy goes above and beyond for her community.

The 6-year-old German Shepherd is trained in tracking and drug sniffing. Now, she’s taking on a new challenge: Running for mayor.

"I actually found out about it from one of the students at the grade school," Sgt. Dale Kerber said. "I hadn’t been told yet that my K-9 partner was throwing, her hat had been thrown into the ring."

Fair Haven has a town manager, and the mayoral position is part of a fundraiser to build a new playground.

"We thought to go with the national trend and have our dog challenge the mayor, or whoever the candidate is and campaign fundraising, and all that money would be donated to the playground," Chief Bill Humphries said.

Sammy's potential competition is a goat named Lincoln, who won the mayor's seat by just three votes in 2019.
