A driver struck and killed a woman sitting at a bus stop in Tempe Friday morning, police said.

The crash happened at around 5:30 a.m. near Warner and Rural roads.

The driver, a man in his 80s, was traveling south when he lost control and drove into the northbound lanes before crashing into the bus stop, Tempe Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Hector Encinas said.

Life-saving efforts were attempted, but the woman was pronounced dead. The driver was arrested on scene, Encinas said.

It wasn't immediately clear whether impairment was a factor in the crash, Encinas said.

The area was expected to be restricted through the morning as the investigation continues.

No further details were immediately available.
