Police: Driver in crash that killed Port Orange father was on cellphone, ran red light

The driver that crashed into the car of a Port Orange father of three, killing him, was looking at his cell phone and ran a red light, Daytona Beach police said.

The driver in the crash early Saturday that killed David Thorpe, Sr., 28, was not identified by police but the Range Rover he was driving had Texas license plates, according to a Daytona Beach police accident report.

The 22-year-old driver had an address in Irving, Texas, the report showed.

The Range Rover crashed into the side of the 2017 Dodge Charger that Thorpe was driving at Mason Avenue and Bill France Boulevard at 6:05 a.m., police said.

The driver of the Range Rover stated "that he was looking down at his cellphone and when he looked up the traffic light was red as he passed into the intersection and collided" with the victim's vehicle, "causing a front-to-side collision," Daytona Beach police traffic homicide investigators wrote.

Thorpe's fiancee, Teriyana Frost said Monday that her fiance had just left his job at B. Braun Medical Inc. and was going home when the Range Rover plowed into his car.

Thorpe leaves behind three small children and a niece he was caring for, Frost said.

A candlelight vigil will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Riverwalk Park in Port Orange, his fiancee said.

Daytona Beach police said that the Range Rover was northbound on Bill France Boulevard when it ran the red light crashing into the Dodge Charger that was east on Mason Avenue.

Thorpe died at the scene of the crash, police said.

No charges have been filed as the fatal crash is still under investigation, said Daytona Beach police spokeswoman Carrie McCallister.
