Police: Driver intentionally crashes into Lebanon businesses

Jan. 23—A Thorntown man who intentionally rammed his van into four Lebanon businesses and a police car was hospitalized for a mental health evaluation Saturday morning, authorities said.

No one was hurt, police said. And one business owner appreciates the opportunity to update her building and said the crash drove business higher Saturday night.

Jeffrey Clouser was "playing bumper cars" around town and had "issues" with someone connected to each of the businesses he damaged, Lebanon Police Officer Tyreese Griffin said Sunday.

Clouser left a trail of damage at Carmack's Pub, 124 S. Lebanon St.; The Hi-Wa Hut, 924 W. South St.; an auto repair shop; and J & J Muffler at 1404 W. South St., before police caught up to him as he repeatedly rammed into a parked truck at 1603 Douglass Lane, Griffin said.

LPD Officer Tom Edmonds pulled in behind Clouser and gave him instructions to cease, which he ignored in favor of backing up to ram into Edmonds' service car and laying on the gas, Griffin said.

Clouser was arrested at gunpoint and refused medical treatment, but police wanted his mental health evaluated before booking him into the Boone County Jail, Griffin said.

Carmack's owner Danielle Hoffman said the damage is a bit of a blessing in disguise.

"Nobody got hurt," she said. "If it had happened at 2 a.m., people would have been hurt, and that would have been awful."

The bar was closed when the wall was hit.

The van taking out the pub's façade let's her replace it. "We're going to make this place look nice," she said.

Plus, the bar experienced a record crowd Saturday night after word got around on social media.

Firefighters helped her find a company to board up the damage. Then Hoffman and her husband hung twinkle lights over the damage to let folks know they were open, and she said she's pretty sure the hubbub on social media drove more customers their way.

"It was the busiest it's ever been," she said. "One hundred and forty people showed up for the drag show." Carmack's hosts a monthly MissFitz drag show.

Fans of the bar joked about the crash on Facebook. Someone with the screen name Timothy Bells posted about the disc jockey, "He brings down the house for sure, but I'm not sure this is what they meant when they said 'From the windows to the walls.'"

Lebanon Police will ask the Boone County Prosecutor's Office to file for charges including leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving against Clouser. It was unclear if Clouser was under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of the crashes, but toxicology reports are pending, Griffin said.
