Police say driver ran Main Street stop sign, collided with postal van and then a building

Jan. 24—MITCHELL — A driver was cited Wednesday afternoon after failing to stop at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Main Street, resulting in a collision with a United State Postal Service vehicle and a building.

Aleta Stewart Liddeke, 80, was issued the citation after she failed to stop, according to Patrick Marler, an officer with the Mitchell Police Division. The 1996 Ford Explorer then collided with a USPS vehicle and the building located on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The crash also knocked down a stop sign and its post at the intersection.

There were no serious injuries reported from the collisions. Marler said witnesses reported that Liddeke, of Alexandria, may have been traveling between 20 and 30 mph when the vehicle she was driving struck the other vehicle and the building, which is home to the Chris A. Nipe law office.

The Explorer was estimated to be a total loss.

The crash occurred at about 3:10 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and resulted in first responders blocking some lanes of traffic as they worked the scene. Both vehicles had been towed and emergency personnel were leaving the scene by about 4:15 p.m.
