Police escort NFL player Odell Beckham Jr. off a plane at Miami International Airport

Miami-Dade police escorted unsigned NFL star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. off a Los Angeles-bound plane Sunday morning at Miami International Airport, the agency said and social media video showed.

In a series of four Tweets from 10:07 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., Beckham wrote, “Never in my life have I experienced what just happened to me...I’ve seen it all;” “Never. In. My. Life;” “I COULD NEVER MAKE THIS UP.” and “comedy hr” with a laughing emoji.

The tweets came more than an hour after Beckham first boarded an American Airlines plane for flight No. 1228, a MIA to LAX flight scheduled to leave at 9:01 a.m. Prior to take off, Miami-Dade police say they received a call to the aircraft’s gate at 9:30.

According to Miami-Dade police, Beckham “appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness” to the flight crew as they tried to get him to fasten his seat belt.

“Fearing that Mr. Beckham was seriously ill, and that his condition would worsen through the expected five-hour flight, the attendants called for police and fire rescue,” Miami-Dade police said. “Upon the officers arrival, the flight crew asked Mr. Beckham several times to exit the aircraft, which he refused.

“The aircraft was deplaned, at which time Mr. Beckham was asked by the officers to exit the plane, and did so without incident.”

Police say they walked Beckham out past the security checkpoints, “where he made other arrangements.”

Beckham’s New Orleans-based lawyer, Daniel Davillier, sent a statement to Pro Football Talk that said Beckham had been asleep with his blanket over his head as is his custom for long flights and he wasn’t awakened to put his seat belt on until the plane was back at the gate. Davillier’s statement, as reported by the website, called the flight attendant “overzealous” and said deplaning everyone wasn’t necessary.

“At no time was Mr. Beckham disruptive or combative. He was willing to comply with the seatbelt requirement, but the flight attendant wanted to prove that he had the authority to have Mr. Beckham removed from the flight,” Pro Football Talk reported Davillier’s statement reading. “The airline proceeded to send Mr. Beckham’s luggage to Los Angeles without him.”

Following the incident, American Airlines flight 1228 eventually took off around 11:30 a.m.

Beckham, who rose to stardom with the New York Giants (2014-2018) and had what many considered to be a disappointing run with the Cleveland Browns (2019-21), hasn’t played this season. After Cleveland released him in the middle of the 2021 season, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams and suffered a torn knee ligament while helping the Rams win Super Bowl XLVI.

The NFL rumor mill has the Dallas Cowboys as the favorite to eventually sign Beckham this season.
