Police identify man shot and killed near Evansville movie theater

EVANSVILLE – An Evansville man was arrested early Sunday after police say he called 911 and told dispatchers he shot and killed a man behind a movie theater.

Brandon Francis Schaefer, 21, was booked into the Vanderburgh County jail at 6:30 a.m. Sunday on a preliminary charge of murder, jail records state. The victim was identified Monday morning as Todd Keith Roll, 49, of Evansville.

According to an Evansville police news release, Schaefer called 911 just after 1 a.m. and said he'd shot a man in the head, and that investigators would find the body behind Showplace Cinemas North in the 4200 block of North Third Avenue. Schaefer reportedly then threatened to shoot himself.

"Officers located a deceased male partially submerged in the creek behind the movie theater," the release states. "Officers also located a firearm in the water on the opposite side of the creek."

Police reportedly found Schaefer at his home. According to the release, Schaefer claimed he didn't know Roll.

"He admitted that he approached the victim and shot him," the release states.

Schaefer's case hasn't been entered into court records.
