Police fatally shoot man in Montville while assisting Elmwood Park attempted murder case

Two police officers shot and killed a man at a Morris County motel Saturday while trying to serve an arrest warrant in an Elmwood Park attempted murder case from earlier in the week, according to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office.

Authorities did not identify the man killed at the Route 46 motel in the Pine Brook section of Montville, but a statement by the Attorney General's Office said the Morris County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team was assisting Bergen County law enforcement in the Elmwood Park case at the time of the shooting. James Allandale, 61, was accused of a shooting on Lincoln Avenue in Elmwood Park Tuesday and has been on the run since then.

Detectives learned "the suspect" was in one of the motel rooms and tried to get inside at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, the Attorney General's Office stated. A gunfight then broke out between the unidentified suspect and two Morris County SERT officers, officials said. The officers tried to treat the man on the scene but he was pronounced dead at 7:27 p.m., according to the Attorney General's Office.

A gun was found near the man's body, the Attorney General's Office stated. The two officers were also treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Few details were released about the Elmwood Park shooting but it led to a massive search for Allandale.

"We want to let residents know that we have flooded the area with police patrols, some uniformed some undercover," Elmwood Park police Chief Michael Foligno said on Wednesday. The alert issued by police warned people to consider Allandale armed and dangerous.

The Attorney General's Office investigates anytime there's a death during a police encounter, per state guidelines.
