Police grab neighbor's ladder, rescue man from Rockaway Township home fire

Police used a ladder to save a resident from the second floor of a heavy residential fire early Sunday morning in Rockaway Township, authorities said.

Police were the first to arrive at the scene on Mount Hope Avenue at 5:34 a.m. Initial alerts reported eight people may have still been inside. The responding officers saw a man trapped in a second-floor bedroom.

Using a ladder they found at a nearby property, they reached the man and rescued him through a rear window.

"The heroic actions by officers Shay, Reddin, Parks, McAndrew, Peralta and Sergeant Tanis resulted in everyone exiting the residence safely," Rockaway Township police posted on Facebook.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire, which caused heavy damage to the home, is under investigation.

Responders to the second-alarm call were firefighters from White Meadow Lake Fire Company No. 5, Hibernia Fire Company No. 1, Marcella Fire Company No. 3, Dover and Picatinny Arsenal.

Mutual aid included the Rockaway Borough, Denville Volunteer, Boonton Township and Wharton fire departments.
