A Waukee Police Department School Resource Officer found a handgun in a student's backpack Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release.
At 12:02 p.m. Tuesday, the resource officer at Waukee Timberline School, which teaches 8th- and 9th-grade students, responded to a report of a student carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds, according to the release.
According to the release, the officer searched the student's backpack, where they found the handgun. No threats were made against anyone by the student, who said he had it for "self-protection regarding a non-school related matter."
The weapon is in the custody of the Waukee Police Department, and the student was transported to a juvenile detention facility.
"We understand students may have questions and concerns and we'll make our counselors and staff available to any families," Waukee Community School District Spokesperson Amy Varcoe said in a statement Tuesday.
