Police ID 28-year-old motorcyclist killed Tuesday in Red Lion-area crash

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been updated to clarify details of how the vehicles and motorcycle were moving through the intersection at the time of the crash.

A 28-year-old man was killed Tuesday after his motorcycle collided with a car in Bear, Delaware State police said.

Police identified the motorcyclist as John Aiken of Bear.

Aiken was traveling north at 7:06 p.m. on Red Lion Road in a Harley-Davidson Sportster approaching Hunters Run Way, police said. At that time, he was behind another vehicle that was attempting to turn right at the intersection but was partially in both the through-lane and the turning lane, according to police.

Traveling south at the time was a 2015 Hyundai Sonata driven by a 31-year-old Elkton, Maryland, man. That vehicle was preparing to make a left-hand turn across traffic onto Hunters Run Way, police said.

Police said Aiken collided with the Hyundai as multiple vehicles were traveling around the intersection. The crash occurred as Aiken attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him that was turning right and crossed over the double yellow line to do so, according to investigators.

Police said Aiken saw the Hyundai turning and hit the brakes, but was unable to stop in time and crashed into the vehicle.
