PORTSMOUTH — Robert Mayo, 53, has been identified as the person who died after being struck by a car near the entryway to Prescott Park early Tuesday morning, Portsmouth police announced Wednesday.

Mayo, formerly of Londonderry and Hooksett, according to police, was hit just before 5 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of lower State Street and Marcy Street in front of the landmark park, according to city police. He was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, police said.

Portsmouth police Capt. David Keaveny said Mayo's last known address was 8 Bell St. in Hooksett and "he appeared to be between housing" at the time of his death.

A 50-year-old woman driving a blue Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, with no fixed address, was identified by police as the driver who struck the man. She reported the accident to police, according to the Portsmouth police log, and has been cooperative, police said. She was not injured.
