Police identify 27-year-old victim in Thursday shooting

BATTLE CREEK — Police have confirmed the identity of a 27-year-old Battle Creek man killed in a Thursday shooting.

Elmarko Fontane Williams Jr. was shot and later died from his injuries Thursday following a string of shootings over a 48-hour period in the city. Police declined to share any additional information Monday as investigations into these shootings continue.

Williams' death is the eighth homicide reported in Battle Creek this year, city officials said.

Police responded to several reports of gunshots in the area of Maple Terrace around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived, officers spoke to several neighbors in the 100 block of Maple Terrace and found Williams, who was shot in the torso.

Officers provided medical assistance until LifeCare Ambulance arrived and transported Williams to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, police said. Williams later died from his injuries.

Police are currently investigating this incident as part of a string of several shootings. Officers believe these shootings are related, and stem from an ongoing dispute between two groups of individuals.

No additional injuries have been reported from these shootings, police said.

Authorities do not believe that the public is in danger and they are "taking proactive measures to stop this string of violence."

Anyone in the area early Thursday morning who might have information that would help police is asked to call the Battle Creek Police Department at 269-781-0911, or anonymously through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
