Police identify child killed in Staunton homicide as investigation continues

STAUNTON — Authorities in Staunton have identified a child that was killed over the weekend.

The Staunton Police Department said Averianna May, 2, died Saturday, which resulted in the arrest of a suspect two days later.

On Monday, police arrested Christopher S. Hoover, 23, of Staunton, and charged him with second-degree murder in the child's death.

Police have not said how the girl was killed.

On Tuesday morning, Sgt. Butch Shifflett, a spokesperson for the police department, described Hoover as the child's "caregiver." Additional details have not been released.

Hoover is being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.
