Police identify victims of fatal crashes in Lincoln, Woonsocket

The police in Lincoln and Woonsocket have released the names of drivers killed in crashes Tuesday morning.

The driver killed in a single-car crash in Lincoln was identified Wednesday as Donald E. Alves, 65, of Cumberland.

Alves was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Twin River Road, according to Lincoln Police Chief Brian Sullivan.

It was one of three fatal crashes on Rhode Island roads between Monday night and Thursday morning.

Heading east on Twin River Road, Alves, alone in the car, apparently failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road and down an embankment, struck a tree and rolled over, according to the Police Department's preliminary investigation.

Shortly before the fatal crash, which was near the entrance to Bally's Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort, Alves sideswiped another vehicle, Sullivan said.

The Lincoln police and the state police are investigating the cause of the crash, including whether a medical event played a role, according to Sullivan. Anyone who witnessed it is asked to contact the Lincoln Police Department at (401) 333-8281.

A few hours later, at about 11:44 a.m., in Woonsocket, a 58-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Harris Street. She was Cristina Perez, 58, of Burrillville, according to Woonsocket Police Chief Thomas F. Oates III.

A 20-year-old woman who was a passenger with Perez is still being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, according to Oates.

No additional information was available Wednesday on a 25-year-old woman who was in the other vehicle, which flipped over and caught fire. She was also taken to Rhode Island Hospital; her injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening, according to Oates.

At about 9:30 p.m. Monday, a 37-year-old Abington, Massachusetts, man died on Route 95 north in Exeter, according to the Rhode Island State Police. Two passengers suffered minor injuries. Their names have has not been released.
