Police investigate Commercial Street stabbing homicide

Springfield police are investigating a homicide that occurred in the early morning hours Saturday.

According to a press release, officers responded to Cox South Hospital just before 11 p.m. in reference to a male being treated for stab wounds. During the initial investigation, officers discovered the victim, Stephen Meyle, 37, from Springfield, had initially been dropped off at Cox North Hospital at approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday and was later transported to Cox South Hospital due to his life-threatening injuries.

On Monday, Springfield Homicide Detectives conducting the follow up investigation determined the stabbing happened at 1017 E. Commercial St. They processed the crime scene and collected evidence.

On Tuesday, Meyle succumbed to his wounds and died at the hospital. Meyle’s family has been notified.

A potential suspect has been identified and located, police said, but no arrest has yet been made as further information is being gathered prior to submitting the case to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney for review and consideration of charges.
