Police investigate after motorcyclist hit by truck on Alabama Street in Central El Paso

A motorcyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a truck Monday evening near McKelligon Canyon in Central El Paso, police said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the motorcycle was northbound on Alabama Street when it collided with a pickup entering the road from Pierce Avenue, police said.

Northeast resident Gabriel Ortiz, 45, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle at a high speed when a Toyota Tacoma driven by Enrique Hernandez Carrillo, 57, of the East Side, was making a left turn onto Alabama, police said Tuesday.

Before the pickup cleared the intersection, the motorcycle hit the rear left side of the truck causing Ortiz to fall and slide on the street, police said

The motorcyclist was taken to a University Medical Center of El Paso with serious injuries.

A police news release stated that the failure to yield the right of way on behalf of the pickup driver and the high rate of speed by the motorcyclist were factors in the collision.

Alabama was closed from Pierce Avenue to McKelligon Canyon Road while the collision was under investigation by the police Special Traffic Investigations Unit.
