Police investigate stabbing death on Cloverdale Road; suspect charged with assault

Lane County Sheriff's Office

Police are investigating a stabbing early Thursday morning that left one man dead at a residence on Cloverdale Road in Cloverdale.

The deceased victim was identified Friday as Justin Wayne Gardner, 49, of Creswell.

The 42-year-old suspect, Brandon Travis Lamb, was arraigned Friday in Lane County Circuit Court on one charge of second-degree assault.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office responded after getting a call around 1 a.m. from a house in the 84000 block of Cloverdale Road where a woman said her ex-husband had stabbed her boyfriend, Sgt. Thomas Speldrich said in a news release. The woman said the man fled the location on foot after the stabbing.

Upon arrival deputies found Gardner had wounds on one arm and on his hip. They performed CPR and other life-saving measures. Medics also arrived and tried to revive Gardner, but he did not survive.

Officers searched the area for the suspect but did not immediately find him.

Later that morning, detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Springfield Police Department tracked Lamb to an apartment complex near First and F streets in Springfield. Police found Lamb in a vehicle in the parking lot and arrested him without incident, Speldrich said.

Officers found multiple knives in the vehicle during the arrest. It has not been determined if any were used in the alleged assault, Speldrich said. The case is still under investigation. Lamb remains lodged at Lane County Jail.
