Police investigate threat to student at Cheboygan Area Schools

CHEBOYGAN — Law enforcement officers are investigating a threat reportedly made to a student at Cheboygan Area Schools.

According to a joint release from the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department and City of Cheboygan Police Department, Deputy Ron Fenlon, who is the school resource officer for Cheboygan Area Schools, was notified of a threat to a student by text message at 2:02 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The threat gave the indication this person was on their way to the school with a weapon. The school was put into secure mode while law enforcement from the Cheboygan City Police Department and the sheriff's department responded. Officers arrived at the school and made contact with Fenlon. During that time, the suspect was observed near the school property and officers quickly approached and apprehended them.

“Officer Auger and Deputy Fenlon did what they were trained to do by making the approach quickly and taking the suspect into custody,” said Sgt. Ron White with the Cheboygan City Police.

A search of the suspect did not locate any weapons.

“This is why we train,” said Sheriff Dale Clarmont. “I commend all involved for their quick action to ensure the safety of the school and the students inside.”

Clarmont added this situation is exactly why he has a school resource officer in the schools.

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement said the juvenile, age 13, acted alone. The juvenile will be brought before the Probate Court.

“We take all threats seriously and will vigorously investigate these threats,” White said. “We will not tolerate threats to the schools or students.”

Superintendent Paul Clark agreed and reiterated that school safety is at the top of the list to ensure a safe environment.

“I am thankful for the law enforcement community and the working relationship we have so we are committed to the safety of the students and staff," he said.
