A suspect is in custody after stabbing a 12-year-old boy inside of a downtown McDonald's. KDKA's Jessica Guay has the story.
BRYANT REED: Good evening. And thanks for joining us. I'm Bryant Reed.
We start tonight with a developing story in downtown Pittsburgh. A 12-year-old is in critical condition after being stabbed. Jessica Guay is live along Liberty Avenue with the latest. Jess, do police know why this happened?
JESSICA GUAY: Well, they're saying this is devastating and tragic, what happened here. We're told that the 12-year-old boy was stabbed in the neck while he was standing in line with his family inside of this very busy McDonald's on Liberty Avenue. Now, he was taken to the hospital. He's in critical condition.
We spoke with Cara Cruz with Pittsburgh Public Safety. And she says the suspect, who is a man, was taken into custody for questioning, also says that the man was standing behind the boy and his family in line. This happened just after 2:00 PM.
This is a very busy location downtown, especially on a nice Saturday like today. Lots of people go in and out of this McDonald's. Cruz tells me there's no indication that the victim and suspect knew each other. But at this point, Pittsburgh police do not know if this was a random act. They're reviewing videos and speaking to witnesses.
CARA CRUZ: As it seems right now, it seems like it was unprovoked. But like I said, they're looking at all the video and trying to determine exactly what happened here. I should say that two McDonald's employees did try to intervene and help the child. And then police and EMS arrived on the scene. Really, quite a tragic thing on a beautiful Saturday downtown.
JESSICA GUAY: This McDonald's is closed now. But there is a sign on their door that says they will be open tomorrow. The boy and the suspect have not been identified by police yet. We'll keep you updated as we learn more on this investigation. Live downtown, Jessica Guay, KDKA News.
