Police investigating 12 reports of illegal withdrawals from a metro-east ATM

The Fairview Heights Police Department is investigating reports of unauthorized cash withdrawals from a Scott Credit Union ATM at 555 Lincoln Highway, according a release from the department.

The release, posted Tuesday on the police department’s Facebook page, states that the department has received 12 reports of unauthorized withdrawals made on March 16 and March 17.

“As it is early in the investigation, the exact means that were used to compromise the debit cards is unclear,” the release states.

The release says that typically, thieves use a ``skimming device” to make these withdrawals.

“A skimming device electronically captures card data and either stores it on the device or transmits it to a nearby computer. Skimming devices are commonly placed inside of ATM machines or gas pumps,” the release states “Criminals then imprint the stolen data onto other cards with a magnetic strip.”

The police department urged people to check their bank statements and report any suspicious activity.

The release did not say how much money was fraudulently withdrawn.
