Gunfire pierces through bedroom door, killing man; suspect posts bond

Police arrested a suspect after a man was shot and killed in Gaston County Wednesday morning.

Dallas police officers were called just after midnight to a home on Eastway Drive off Old Spencer Mountain Road. Inside, they found Christopher Knox Wery, 25, who had been shot.

Wery died from his injuries at the hospital.

There hasn’t been a deadly shooting in Dallas since 2017.

Later Wednesday, police said Nicholas Max Tallent was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder.

On Thursday, Tallent posted his half-million-dollar bond, according to the Gaston County Jail.

Channel 9′s Ken Lemon was in court Wednesday as Tallent appeared before a judge. Chris Wery’s mother was also there, looking for answers she couldn’t get Tuesday night. It was difficult for her to face Tallent, the man accused of shooting her son.

Tallent’s mother was also there and pled for a lower bond, but prosecutors said the circumstances of this case were dire.

Prosecutors said Wery and a friend were at Tallent’s home. When Wery was ready to go, he called his mother to pick him up. Sometime after that call, according to the prosecution, Tallent fired six shots through his bedroom door. Three of those shots hit and killed Wery.

Lemon spoke with his mother, Angela Wery, who said she cried so much overnight that she didn’t want to show her face on camera.

“I want the truth of what happened because I wasn’t there, and I want to see justice be served where it need be,” she told Lemon.

She and her son finished their last phone conversation saying ‘I love you.’

Angela Wery said she made a wrong turn on the way to pick Chris up. She believes if she hadn’t made that mistake, she might have arrived in time to prevent the shooting.

Dallas officers said the investigation is open and ongoing.
