Police investigating Rehoboth Beach-area crash that killed motorcyclist weeks later

Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate the Sept. 2 crash near Rehoboth Beach that injured an 81-year-old motorcyclist, who died in the hospital over two weeks later.

The motorcyclist has been identified as Richard Bland of Rehoboth Beach.

State police said Bland was riding a silver 2010 Honda Cruiser in the left northbound lane of Coastal Highway just past Camelot Drive at 5:42 p.m. For "unknown reasons," police said, Bland rear-ended a black 2018 Jeep Cherokee that was stopped in traffic in the same lane.

The impact partially knocked the 81-year-old off the motorcycle, according to police, and he ended up in the middle of the left lane. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died on Sept. 19.

The 55-year-old man from Randolph, New Jersey, who was driving the Jeep was not injured.

Police did not immediately respond to questions about why information about the crash was not released until eight days after Bland's death.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Master Cpl. K. Argo at (302) 703-3264 or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
