Police investigating a Thursday night shooting homicide in New Bedford's South End.

NEW BEDFORD — Local and state authorities are investigating after what police are calling a homicide in New Bedford's South End Thursday night.

At around 11:04 p.m., New Bedford police received a Shot Spotter notification regarding multiple shots fired in the area of 123 County St., as well as multiple 911 calls for shots fired and a male victim in the area of 116 County St., the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said in a Friday media release.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found evidence of a shooting but no victim, according to the release. A short time later, a private vehicle arrived at Saint Luke's Hospital with the victim inside.

The victim, later identified as Amareuito Fernandes, 27, of New Bedford, was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 11:33 pm.

"The investigation is extremely active as of this moment and no further information can be released about the case," the DA's release said.

New Bedford Police Department and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney's Office and Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating the incident.

Thursday was the second deadly shooting in New Bedford this summer. On July 2, 20-year-old Lorenzo Gomes was shot and killed while in a car near Tallman and North Front streets.
