Police located two deceased people in abandoned Evansville homes

EVANSVILLE — A death investigation is underway in Evansville after two people were found dead in abandoned houses located less than half a mile apart.

According to the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office, Evansville police located a deceased woman in the 1000 block of Harriet Street on July 14. Positive identification of the woman is pending, a coroner's office release states.

Evansville Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Gray told the Courier & Press the woman's body showed signs of decomposition.

One day later, police reported finding the body of 39-year-old Derek Clark of Evansville in an abandoned home in the 200 block of Read Street.

"An autopsy was conducted, and manner and cause of death are pending toxicology and the final autopsy report," the coroner's office stated. "EPD is continuing these investigations."

EPD Sgt. Taylor Merriss told the Courier & Press on Thursday that it was not yet known if the two deaths were connected in any way.
