Police: Man, 22, shoots, wounds driver in faceoff at West Palm Beach gas station

WEST PALM BEACH — A Riviera Beach man was arrested Thursday on multiple charges including attempted first-degree murder after shooting a driver in a gas station parking lot, city police said Friday.

Leroy Brown III, 22, was arrested following an incident that unfolded after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Majestic Gas Station at 2624 N. Australian Ave. West Palm Beach Police say a Palm Beach Gardens man, also 22, was parked in his Volkswagen at a pump behind a van when a Mercedes pulled in behind him.

Apparently unaware of the Mercedes, the driver backed up his VW and struck the front bumper of the Mercedes. That car’s driver, whom police identified as Brown, was standing outside the car at the time and then approached the Volkswagen with a handgun.

Brown opened the door of the Volkswagen and fired at the driver, police said. As the wounded shooting victim left the gas station, he opened fire from his weapon at Brown’s fleeing Mercedes. A third car was struck by the gunfire, but no one was injured, police said.

The victim, whose name was withheld under the state’s Marsy’s Law privacy restriction, drove himself to St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment. Police conducted surveillance on an apartment complex in the 7000 block of Banyan Leaf Drive off Belvedere Road near Florida’s Turnpike after locating Brown’s car.

Police later recovered a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun and arrested Brown, charging him with attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, shooting into an occupied vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm in public.

He was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail early Friday, police said.
