Police: Man in Broward blows hand off with fireworks

LAUDERDALE LAKES — In a cautionary tale for July 4, look to central Broward County.

A man there was holding a firework when it exploded early Saturday, blowing his hand off, the county sheriff's office said in a statement.

Broward County rescue workers received the call after 1 a.m. Saturday and came to the 4400 block of North State Road 7 in Lauderdale Lakes, where they found the man's hand and brought it to a nearby hospital. He had already traveled to the medical facility in a private vehicle, police said.

Broward Fire Rescue then took the hand and its owner to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale for treatment.
