Utica police and firefighters were dispatched to the McDonald's parking lot at about 3:40 p.m. for a reported stabbing, the release said.

Utica police Sgt. Michael Curley said Evans was in a relationship with the woman, who is not being identified by police due to the nature of the incident. The two were living in a vehicle together, when an argument occurred in the parking lot and Evans stabbed her in the neck and body multiple times with a kitchen knife, Curley said.

The woman was immediately brought to the St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System for treatment and is expected to live despite suffering injuries, the release said.

Police credited the woman's expected recovery to efforts from Utica firefighters and St. Elizabeth staff as well as witnesses at the scene, who applied pressure to the woman's wounds and called 911, Curley said. They also provided information about the vehicle at the scene and a description of the suspect. Police matched the vehicle's registration to an address in Herkimer. While driving to the address, a Utica police officer noticed the vehicle in Herkimer and a man matching the suspect's description, he said.

Evans was arrested by Utica police with assistance from the Herkimer Police Department, the release said. He is currently being held in the Oneida County jail, according to jail records.
