Police: Man dead after two-vehicle crash in Ripley County Saturday morning

One man is dead after a crash in Ripley County Saturday morning, according to the Indiana State Police.

At approximately 9 a.m., troopers responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 421, just south of Napoleon, Indiana.

According to a press released from the Indiana State Police, the driver of 2000 Jeep was traveling north on U.S. 421 when it crossed the centerline into the path of a 2015 Kenworth dump truck that was traveling south. Police said the dump truck was owned by the Ripley County Highway Department.

The two vehicles then collided nearly head first in the southbound lanes, police said.

The driver of the 2000 Jeep sustained fatal injuries due to the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ripley County Coroner's Office. The driver has been identified as Norman P. Kappes, 53, from Osgood, Indiana.

The driver of the Kenworth dump truck has been identified as Timothy M. Sides, 49, from Versailles, Indiana. Police said that Sides was not injured in the crash.

Police said that it is unknown why Kappes' vehicle crossed the centerline. At this time, alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors, although toxicology tests for both drivers are pending at this time.

U.S. 421 was closed for approximately five hours today due to the investigation and cleanup of the crash.

Napoleon, Indiana, is around 61 miles west of Cincinnati.

Indiana State Police said that the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
